7) Consume small size in memoryThe wait is over. After months of hype, Apple has formally announced the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus and - as usual - the new handsets are polarising opinion. Fans are excited by some potentially game changing changes, while critics bemoan the stylistic similarities to the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
What does this mean for you? Let’s break down the differences and find out..
Design - Familiar But Intelligently Improved
Yes, the new iPhones look much like the old iPhones. This is the number one area where many will complain, but look more closely and there are key differences.
Next: Performance, (Frustrating) Battery Life, Cost and an Early Verdict..
Performance - Big Jump, But Memory The Key
As expected, the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus debut Apple’s next generation Apple A9 chipset. It also typically refused to give away any technical details regarding clock speeds or even RAM (more later), but these should be revealed by teardowns in time.
Instead we get a simple bottom line: the A9 chipset will offer 70% greater CPU performance and 90% greater graphics performance compared to the A8 chipset in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
While Apple has had bigger performance jumps in iPhone history (notably the iPhone 5S more than doubled the performance of the iPhone 5), little was needed this generation with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus still racing around iOS without a hint of slowdown.
Whether this investment is better than simply selling your old iPhone and putting the money towards another unlocked iPhone is open to debate. Personally the idea of a rolling two year carrier contract doesn't appeal, but the lure of annual iPhone upgrades will undoubtedly tempt many.

The big caveat: shockingly Apple has again snubbed the smaller iPhone with the 6S not receiving Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) like the 6S Plus. Instead it will have to put up with Digital Image Stabilisation (DIS) which should again give the iPhone phablet a noticeable advantage.
Winner: iPhone 6S Plus
The very disappointing absence of OIS from the iPhone 6S makes this an easy win

Instead where the most important change made be made is still a mystery: RAM. The iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus are thought to be the first 2GB iPhones and this will be vital to the long term advanced multitasking plans in iOS 9.
Will there be any real world difference between the two? Actually yes. The higher resolution of the iPhone 6 Plus was found to impact its performance compared to the iPhone 6 as it has to drive more pixels for its display. That remains true again, though it shouldn’t make a great deal of difference overall.
Winner: iPhone 6S
Though we can’t see the iPhone 6S Plus struggling to keep up for quite some time
Note: both the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus also received upgraded LTE performance, now supporting speeds up to 300Mbit per second. That’s nice, but something you’ll be highly unlikely to achieve in real life.
Touch ID 2.0 - Faster And More Secure
With Apple Pay slowly gaining mainstream adoption, Apple has chosen an optimal time to bring an upgraded version of Touch ID to the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus.

It is now even more accurate and has faster recognition than its predecessors, not that many were complaining about Touch ID on the iPhone 5S, (upgraded) iPhone 5C, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus…

Winner: N/A
Battery Life and Charging
Apple boasts that the A9 chipset is more efficient, but sadly it hasn’t coupled that new efficiency with the extra win of larger capacity batteries. Instead - to much dismay - the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus are actually thought to sport smaller capacity batteries than the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus:
- iPhone 6S: 1715 mAh, iPhone 6S Plus: 2750 mAh
- iPhone 6: 1810 mAh, iPhone 6 Plus: 2915 mAh
The good(ish) news is Apple says this won’t mean reduced performance and the new phones will offer exactly the same battery life as their predecessors. This is fine for the long lasting iPhone 6S Plus, but very disappointing for the iPhone 6S as battery life was arguably the worst aspect to the iPhone 6.

Furthermore Apple continues to snub fast charging and wireless charging, both increasingly standard features on rival phones. As such battery life is arguably the most disappointing aspect to the new iPhones.

Basilisk 5e monster manual. The MGE Basilisk. This article or section is about (or a monster that is frequently depicted as a Monstergirl), something that /tg/ widely considers to be the purest form of. Rejoice not thou, whole Philistia, that the rod of him that struck thee is broken in pieces: for out of the root of the serpent shall come forth a basilisk, and his seed shall swallow the bird.
But in reality both lose.
Cost - No Surprises, Storage - A Letdown
With the shift to more expensive Series 7000 aluminium (as well as a more premium camera sensor and Touch ID technology) there had been fears iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus prices would increase this year. Happily that hasn’t happened and identical price points remain:
- iPhone 6S: $649 (16GB), $749 (64GB) and $849 (128GB)
- iPhone 6S Plus: $749 (16GB), $849 (64GB) and $949 (128GB)
Gta 5 script hook. Unfortunately you’ll also note that means Apple has kept the 16GB base model for both new iPhones. This is very disappointing, especially in combination with the jump up in camera and video resolutions which will consume storage space a lot quicker.
I can’t defend Apple here. A 32GB entry point would be far more sensible and the cost difference at Apple’s scales would be negligible (sub $20). As such it appears the real reason is to push customers to the 64GB sweet spot in the range, or sell more iCloud storage at a later date.
Hopefully come the iPhone 7 in 2016, 16GB will finally bite the dust.
Winners: iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus 64GB Editions
Separately Apple has announced the 'iPhone Upgrade Program' which allows owners on major carrier contracts to upgrade their iPhones every year and take out Apple Care insurance. This starts at $32pm (16GB iPhone 6S) and includes Apple care, but requires you stick with your existing carrier and sign a new two year contract with each upgrade.
Whether this investment is better than simply selling your old iPhone and putting the money towards another unlocked iPhone is open to debate. Personally the idea of a rolling two year carrier contract doesn't appeal, but the lure of annual iPhone upgrades will undoubtedly tempt many.

Early Verdict - Apple Did Enough, Without Amazing Us
For an ‘S’ year, the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus are fairly predictable: minor external differences belying significant internal change.
Long term 3D Touch is the real news here and it could spell great (or needlessly complex) times ahead for iOS. Meanwhile the additional multitasking capabilities and camera improvements will be deal clinchers for many.
That said I can’t see most iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus users rushing to upgrade and particularly iPhone 6 users where Apple hasn’t addressed its battery weaknesses nor the omission of OIS in the camera. The continuation of a 16GB base option on both models also looks nothing more than mean.
Given the iPhone 5S sold in far greater numbers than the iPhone 5 and those users are finishing their contracts, I still expect the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus to sell in huge numbers. Probably even greater numbers than the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
Which makes the better first impression? Like last year, if size doesn’t concern you, it is the Plus model which makes the bigger impact with display, battery life, camera and software advantages.
That said it feels like Apple has pinned an awful lot this year on 3D Touch which may or may not revolutionise its phones. This should be clearer come the iPhone 7 next year by which time I would hope for significantly more interesting design and battery improvements.

All the strengths of the iPhone 6S, but without its compromises

The iPhone doesn’t support app launchers in the same way as OS X, but that doesn’t mean app developers haven’t come up with clever workarounds. Case in point, our pick for the best launcher, Launch Center Pro lets you launch not only apps, but specific actions within apps.

Where It Excels
Launch Center Pro is one of the first apps to get the idea of being a launcher on iOS right. Instead of simply linking you to various apps on your iPhone (which your home screen already does), Launch Center Pro links you to what it calls actions. An action is what you do inside an app. For example, from Launch Center Pro, you can instantly jump into Facebook’s new photo page, start a text message to a specific person, compose an email to a group, or countless other things. Launch Center Pro essentially gives you access to a specific place inside an app without you having to tap around a bunch to get there. It’s incredibly useful once you get the hang of how it works.

Launch Center Pro does an admirable job of toeing the line between the average user and the power user. When you open up the app, you’re greeted by a number of tutorials to help you get started creating your own actions. Within a few minutes you can instantly create launchers for simple stuff, like texting a close friend or searching for coffee near your current location using Yelp.
If you want, you can stop right there and still enjoy Launch Center Pro. However, if you want to take it further, Launch Center Pro is filled with power-user features. If you’re willing to dig into it, you can set up Launch Center Pro to do some crazy stuff, including sending a specific set of text to a specific person at a certain time of day, or chain together a bunch of actions based on your location. You can even link up Launch Center Pro with IFTTT to chain things together even further. It’s intense how much you can do with Launch Center Pro if you’re willing to spend the time with it, but it’s also impressive how useful it is even if you’re just scraping the surface.

While Launch Center Pro certainly does its best to make creating actions easy, it’s still a little complex for the average iOS user. Still, if you’re willing to invest just a little bit of time in it, you’ll eventually grasp how it works. Once you do get over that hump, the usefulness jumps up quite a bit as you start experimenting with different types of actions, triggers, and more. All that said, because of the complexity of the app, it would be nice if there was a free, trial version for people to check out first.

The Competition
The most direct competition to Launch Center Pro is Launcher(free/$2.99 in-app purchase). Launcher works similar to Launch Center Pro, where you create a set of actions that launch directly into specific parts of an app. Launcher isn’t nearly as intuitive to use as Launch Center Pro, but the fact there’s a free ad-supported version means it’s a good choice if you’re looking to test the waters.

Less directly, Workflow($2.99) sort of falls under the same category of apps as Launch Center Pro and Launcher. Workflow is an incredibly powerful app that allows you to create your own set of actions that function like micro-apps. Workflow differs a bit because it doesn’t always require a third-party app to complete those actions. While Workflow is powerful and does a lot of what Launch Center Pro does, it’s not exactly a launcher. Workflow lacks some of the base functionality needed in a launcher app, especially when it comes to a breadth of app support. Still, Workflow can be manipulated to work as a launcher if you spend some time with it, so it’s worth checking out if you’re looking for something a little different.
